Who doesn't love a castle, complete with a moat?! Muiderslot castle is around half an hour by car from the centre of Amsterdam.
We highly recommend arriving early - We arrived before the castle opened, so walked down the river to take in the castle from a distance. We were then the first to enter the castle, and we managed to walk around the outside of the castle before the crowds of people arrived.
When we went inside the castle, we found it overly busy (thanks to the couple of bus tours which had just arrived), but we still enjoyed the views of the river and the reconstructed rooms inside.
We didn't spend overly long here (we were back in Amsterdam in time for lunch), but this is a great little excursion if you want to see something a bit different.
